Learning & Growing

Spiritual Growth

  • Julian of Norwich Group

Julian was a 14th century mystic and monastic who wrote simply and movingly about the nature of divine love and suffering. This group draws inspiration from her faith and writings, prays for each other, and hosts a Julian Sunday each year.

  • Women’s Bible Study

This women's group meets online twice a month, reading and discussing Scripture and books about Biblical characters or themes, and their application to their lives and our times.

  • Parish Book Group

A long-time St John’s tradition, the group reads a book together out loud – from a shared Zoom screen -- and reflects on it together. Recent books include Rembrandt is in the Wind, A Pilgrimage to Eternity, The Remarkable Ordinary, The Cellist of Sarajevo, and The Relic Masters.

  • Quiet Days

At the start of Advent and/or Lent, usually a Saturday, these mini-retreats invite people into prayer, meditation, and reflection on the season ahead.

  • Men’s Breakfast

Meets one Saturday a month for support, conversation, prayer, sharing, and sometimes a work project – not to mention breakfast!

Education

  • Sunday Forums

Usually after our 10:00 service in a hybrid format, these facilitated conversations are on topics of interest to the parish-whether Christian civic engagement, new developments or special events in the Episcopal church, indigenous people’s day, or a topic related to parish life.

  • Sacred Ground

In this film- and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith, small groups are invited to walk through chapters of American history of race and racism and consider the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.

  • Episcopal 101

A formational class for adult members to learn about our call to be Christians, our history as a church, our way of being church, and our distinctive Episcopal identity, this multi-week class is for those who wish to be baptized, to become Episcopalian, or just people curious about the Episcopal Church!

  • Lenten Series

Wednesday evenings (Zoom or in person), a member of our clergy team leads a thematic faith exploration – perhaps a book in the Bible, a theme of the season, such as pilgrimage; or even a film series to promote discussion on our call and what Lenten season is calling us to.
